All County Jazz Auditions

All Jazz auditions will consist of the following:
1.) SOLO (all instruments): Prepare one of the following: Any Jazz solo from the NYSSMA Manual Volume XXVIII, Level V or VI or Solo Transcriptions by:
Charlie Parker [“Ominbook”], Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane, etc. WCSMA wants to encourage students to learn [transcribe] solos by jazz artists. Any student who wishes to use a solo they have transcribed, must bring an audio recording of the solo!
Or One Selection From: Jazz Conception, by Jim Snidero. Advance Music, 1999.
2.) SIGHT READING (all instruments): Manuscript supplied at site. Guitar and piano players will sight read written melodic lines as well as chord progressions with symbols. Bass players will sight read written lines as well as chord symbols without a bass line.
3.) IMPROVISATION (except drum set): Improvisation is recommended, but not required.
It is suggested that applicants who choose to improvise refer to the NYSSMA Jazz improvisation requirements for levels III-VI found in the NYSSMA Manual, Edition 31. In addition, tracks from the Jamey Aebersold Volume 21, Nothing But the Blues, may be used. Cassette and CD playback equipment will be supplied. Students must provide their own CD’s.
Students not wishing to improvise will be asked to perform major scales. Students with good section playing skills are encouraged to audition even if they do not wish to improvise.
Drum set (In addition to your prepared Solo and 1 and 2 above): In a style chosen by the adjudicator, students will be asked to play 4 measures of time followed by 4 measures of solo, and an extended solo of 30 seconds. Students will also be asked to demonstrate 4 measures of time (quarter note = 80 – 200) in swing, Latin (salsa/Cuban, samba, bossa nova), jazz waltz, rock/funk, and ballad (with brushes).
Amplifiers and drum set will be provided.
